How to Properly Clean Your Instant Pot

Good Friday morning, Moppers. We hope you all had a most excellent week, and are nice and prepped for the weekend. We certainly are!

This week has been a busy one for us, that’s for sure. We’ve been cleaning up a storm since that’s what we do, and one thing we’ve noticed lately is something that’s in a lot of people’s homes.

No, it’s not dirt…though we have noticed that as well.

It’s the thing that’s all the rage right now: the Instant Pot.

What is an Instant Pot? Their website says that it’s a smart-use, programmable pressure cooker designed by Canadians (yay!), with the objective of being convenient, dependable, and safe.

Here, watch this video for more information…

There’s no doubt that millions of people are already enjoying the Instant Pot, but our question is…do you know how to clean one?

Well, if not, that’s why we’re here today. To give you the 411 on how to clean your Instant Pot.

1. Unplug It

The first step is cleaning your Instant Pot is to always, always, unplug it. Even if you’re just doing a simple wipe down of the outside, you don’t want to take any chances of getting electrocuted, right?

2. Clean the Inside and Outside of the Housing Unit

Using a clean, damp rag, wipe down both the inside and outside of the main cooker part of your Instant Pot. This is also called the housing unit.

3. Bottom’s Up

Turing the Instant Pot upside down, use a small bristled brush to clean any dried food residue that you see. Get into all those tight spots, making sure all that food is gone.

4. Wash the Lid

Using warm, soapy water, hand wash the lid of your Instant Pot, making sure to rinse it clean after you’re done. You can set it aside to air dry, but we lie to dry ours with a clean towel right away.

5. The Little Bits

The Instant Pot has a lot of smaller parts to it, so it’s important that you clean each and every one of them.

First, take off the quick release valve by either pulling straight up on it. Wash it with warm, soapy water, dry, and put it back.

Next, remove the shield that covers the steam valve just inside the lid. Depending on your model of Instant Pot, it will either screw off, or pop off. Wash it in warm, soapy water, rinse, dry, and replace it.

Lastly, remove the condensation cup attached to the side of the Instant Pot. Wash it like all the other parts in warm, soapy water, rinse it, dry it, and put it back.

6. The Sealing Ring

Remove the silicone ring on the underside of the lid. You can either wash it in the top rack of your dishwasher (if you have one), or wash it by hand in warm, soapy water. When it’s rinsed and dried, replace it, making sure it fits snug against the lid.

Sometimes the silicone ring can take on some food odors that can get a little pungent after a while, so to deodorize it, just place 1 cup of water in the inner pot of your Instant Pot, along with 1 cup of white vinegar and a few lemon peels. Run your Instant Pot on STEAM for a couple of minutes, and when it unlocks, remove the lid and let it air dry.

7. Everything Else

Finally, wash the inner pot, the steam rack, and whatever accessories you use with your Instant Pot. Both the inner pot and steam rack are dishwasher safe, but we like doing things the old fashioned way, using warm, soapy water to wash them, followed by a good rinse, and dry.

That’s all there is to it. It sounds like a lot, but those who are familiar with the Instant Pot know that it’s really not.

By keeping things clean on a regular basis, you’ll prevent the build up of mold and mildew, and can cook with confidence each time you use your Instant Pot, knowing it’s as fresh as the day you took it out of the box!

That’s all for this week, Moppers. We’ll chat with you again soon, and until then stay safe…and stay clean!
