3 Dangerous Cleaning Products to Avoid

Happy hump day, everyone! It’s the middle of the week, the sun is shining (for now), and the weekend will be here before you know it. As always we’ve been hard at work making our clients happy with a shine so bright you’d think a star blew up in their house.

Okay, maybe not that bright, but you get the idea. We’re good at our job.

Something we’re also good at it making sure that all the products we use are all natural and safe for you and your family.

Unlike those products that many of you might have under the sink right now.

We’ve touched on some of the harsh chemicals that can be found in everyday cleaning products, but now it’s time to name names, so you know just what you’ve gotten yourself in to with some of these toxic materials.

So here are three household cleaners you should probably get rid of right now!

1. Easy-Off Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner Aerosol Spray

Your run of the mill oven cleaners contain large amounts of potassium hydroxide, or sodium that’s used to dissolve all that crusty, baked on gunk in your oven. These can burn your skin, lungs, and eyes if not handled properly.

The label on this particular Easy-Off cleaner specifically says to avoid contact with eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and clothing. You’re supposed to use it with adequate ventilation, and avoid breathing in any of the mist.

So basically you should take your oven outside and wear a hazmat suit to clean it. A little dramatic, sure, but come on…who wants to take the chance of breathing in any of those dangerous toxins?

For an all natural, safe alternative to conventional oven cleaners, check out how to clean your oven the natural way. It’s safe, and works just as well without all the worry of toxic chemicals getting on to your skin, or in your lungs.

2. Drano Professional Strength Kitchen Crystals Clog Remover

Here we have a product that specifically says on the label that it can cause blindness, or even death! Do you really want that in your house? Of course not.

Don’t forget, those crystals can remain in your drain even after you’re done using it, creating the possibility of splash back which could get on your skin and in your eyes. The label also warns to keep water out of the can at all times to prevent the contents from violently erupting or boiling out. Are you kidding me? If I have to worry about my cleaning products violently erupting in my house, then they shouldn’t be in my house.

For a safe alternative, check out this page to learn how to unclog your drain with just hot water, baking soda, and white vinegar!

3. Simply Green Concentrated All-Purpose Cleaner

What? Did you think just because something had the word Green on the label it was safe? Think again.

First off, this product contains 2-butoxyethanol, which is a solvent that can be absorbed through the skin and damages red blood cells, as well as irritates your eyes. Also, it contains a blend of alcohol ethoxylate surfactants, and members of this chemical family have been banned in the European Union.

To go one step further, the Simply Green website directs you to heavily dilute the product, even though it’s available in a spray bottle, which implies you can just spritz it on your messy surfaces and use it right away. Talk about mixed signals, right?

For a safer alternative to this toxic product, check out our own multi-purpose cleaner right here.

It doesn’t stop here, either. We’ll be sharing more everyday cleaners with you in the future that you should probably avoid, and in return we’ll provide safe alternatives for each so you don’t have to worry about breathing in harsh chemicals, or getting toxins on your skin.

We know that it isn’t always feasible to make your own, all natural cleaning products all the time, so all we ask is that if for some reason you do need to use everyday cleaning materials bought off the shelf, please read the labels slowly and carefully so you know exactly what to do to avoid coming into contact with some of their dangerous ingredients.

In the meantime, we’ll hold down the fort here and keep letting you know all natural ways you can clean your home, and protect the ones you love.
